Powell and Goldberg

Page 13

1. The purpose Powell had in his mind while writing this was to show his American Journey and that he went through tough, challenging times while he was a young man in the South. This is probably something no one would think of now that he has become Secretary of State for the Bush’s administration. He achieved this by talking about racism in the South, how when he tried to get a hamburger he was denied to purchase one and the cashier was going to try and sneak one for him in the back because she understood that racism was wrong but he wasn't going to stnad for it. He stated " I occasionally felt hurt; I felt anger;but most of all I felt challenged. I'll show you!". Powell wanted to show he wasn't going to tolerate the racism which lead him to be the man he is today.

2. I believe Powell had the young people in mind as his audience, who are having a difficult time with racism in their town. I would recommend this reading to everyone no matter if they were young, old, African- American or Caucasian or even immigrant who have become citizens. This could just open some people’s eyes that racism has been going on for too long and it needs to stop.

3. The writer, Powell’s attitude throughout the reading was a positive one and I felt that while reading the excerpt. Well, from all the politics I was a fan of Powell but I didn’t know this about him but I have respect for him. I still don’t agree with some things he has done in politics.

1. The purpose Goldberg had in her mind while writing this was aspiring writers and for people who wish to live more creative. In the excerpt, the student that wanted to write for years and immediately tried to form a book. Goldberg was able to give him advice and tell him to take it slow.

2. The audience Goldberg had in mind while writing this was the entire writer who never where pushed to write and develop their thoughts into a great piece of literature. Other audiences that might benefit from this would be children in elementary, middle, and high school and those that wouldn’t benefit from this would be those who don’t like writing.

3. Goldberg’s subject was the student and the inspiration of writing. Her attitude toward her subject to be inspirational to all writers and give them advice that writing is a slow process.
