Journal Entry #5

1.This essay was written in 1971. What types of duties does Syfers describe as being performed by wives? To what degree do you believe these are still done primarily by women? Have these or other things about the husband/wife relationship changed in the last 37 years?
2. How would you describe Syfers’ writing style? Does she do things you would typically avoid in your own writing?
3. Syfers was reacting to a social structure that she felt at the time was unfair. What types of injustice or unfairness do you see in the world nowadays that you think should be addressed? Syfers implies that men benefit from the servile position of women in the family. Who benefits from the injustices you see active in the world today?

1. Some duties Syfers described as being performed by duties were basically everything including going to school and work, taking care of the children and their necessities, taking care of the husband and his necessities, and taking care of the house in general.I believe that taking care of the children and keeping up with the dental and doctor appointment are still done today by women and they also are more involved in the child's education. The husband/wife relationship has changed over the past 37 years because there are such things as a Mr. Mom who takes care of the home while the wife works and makes the income but there are still a large percent of housewives doing the duties described by Syfers. The traditional family today has both parents working and putting into the income with both parents taking care of the children and the houshold equally.
2. Syfers writing style in this article is in the first person but expressive. Syfers uses the word "I" multiple times and repeats words multiples times also. I would typically avoid trying to repeats word multiple times so I don't sound repetative so my audience doesn't feel like they are reading the same things over and over again but it would be interesting to try.
3. Some injustice/unfairness that is happening in the world nowadays that needs to be addressed is still the pay difference of women and men, the economy is a huge issue, the acceptance of only Cubans who cross Florida are allowed to stay but other ethicities aren't, women choice with abortion, basically most of the issues we deal with day to day are unfair. Life is unfair and we just have to deal with it or stand up for it.
